These two pictures are the most recent updates to my newspaper, i still have tweeks to make such as still debating whether i need to change my front cover photo to make it more conventional. Also edit my advertisement layout due to them being similar and fill my top right band with my michelin star story.
on my front cover i am still needing to change my rugby photo due to it being a cup match and the players winning im thinking i need to change it to a celebratory photo.
For my inside page i have changed my two columns to three for my gromit story due to being conventional in newspapers and make it an easier read.
I have had a few issues with my picture because when inserting them to Indesign and adjusting to the different layers they tend to look stretched.
Although not quite finished i believe it shouldn't take me to much longer to make the final adjustment to my A2 media coursework.

To do list:
To move my rugby sports story to page 1 not as a story picture (new dramatic pic) headline jump line
whole of p2 needs to have 5 columns as the present layout is to wordy.
Move my Aqua restaurant story to page 2 - more dramatic punchy story.
Mothers heartbreak story ( front page)
Michelin star story top right - promotional feature advertising more content inside
Check over accuracy in stories .
re shoot photograph for school photos and advert

with my research i have noticed a change from the 25th september issue of bristol post to the previous established grommets featuring on the bristol posts papers over the summer period.
They have taken a new approach to there layout of the newspaper which is now try to target more so females and younger audience as well as middle aged men and women.
there is an interesting page which takes some people personal opinions on the new look.
http://www.holdthefrontpage.co.uk/2013/news/regional-daily-adopts-magazine-style-front-page-in-revamp/ More information can be found on this link . From the new issue on this web link it looks like they gone for a more magazine style layout perhaps this could be to appeal to a younger and female audience.
This new paper published yesturday is very picture heavy just like a magazine and doesnt hold a main cover story now just a main cover photo which is 'balls to the boys' theyve decided to look into womens football achievments rather than the two other mens football teams we have in bristol.
there has been opinions written such as when something more serious appears on the news how will they style a cereal killer story into a magazine looking newspaper.
Similarities however still hold a bold masthead using a serif font which is used for formality
“No matter how much people think they know Bristol, the new Bristol Post strives to find new things for them to do, food for them to eat and places for them to visit, while providing expert insight in to shops, shows, products and performances this is a more positive look into the new bristol post .

With further research into articles in the bristol post I'm going to analyse the type of language they use such as the use of nouns. i have also noticed looking into a various amount they go into a lot more detail on the inside pages rather than the front cover of the newspaper as they dont want a word overload to make it look liek theres to much going which they would then add in gradually through the pages as they go on.
I have started writing my 2 front cover articles these are my first drafts, then one they are in my front cover layout which i have been planning it, then i will do my 2nd draft to make sure i can improve anything that needs improving.
I have done some work on Indesign to create my layout of my front cover of the newspaper which i have changed slightly from my original first draft. This was because i had done more research into front covers and i felt having the picture centred in the middle would fit better with the text surrounding and have my advertisement above the masthead and in the bottom right hand corner.

Having done more research into my Bristol post paper. i have now started to configure some more ideas for my advertisement, i have created a 'Bristol beds' advertisement for there end of season summer sale which i will be posting here soon. Also it will feature a Learning to drive add at an affordable price for you as individuals.
From my questionnaire which i had reached to an age range of 18-55 i have now got a good scope of really excelling of designing and what my newspaper will include of having a real grasp for the content and if i had done enough on my audience research.
Also having done more research into the Grommets of Bristol trail, and them being held in storage at this moment however they have been opened up this weekend for show on the top of park street. Where 100's of people will gather to see the grommets this has gone on from 18-22Nd.
During the period of the grommets unleashed the Bristol post took the opportunity to be clever with advertising through at a local newspaper not only good advertisement for themselves but also the grommets that have been scattered round Bristol for the last month. They then released there august and early september issues with grommets by the masthead. As shown here and you can see above the gromits that there is more information inside giving you the page number p24 about turning gromits into arts of work.
The grommets scattered round Bristol will make an appearance in my newspaper which will feature 2 pictures of the grommets with children that i had taken over the summer and it will have an article feature about the grommet trail and more information about what's involved.
For my poster i will include a smaller print screen version of the front cover of my paper and a headline of ' Your local paper Your local news' Other text to be added ' send in your stories at BristolGazette@hotmail.com and have a chance to win £100. Also i link where you can sign up to get a monthly copy of our paper .

The advertisements that will feature in my newspaper are going to be family based, ranging from Broadband internet and outdoor and home furniture end of summer sale, buffet restaurant that will offer a special offer Monday to Thursday eat all you want for £10, my last advert will be a chance to win a free zoo pass for a month.
For all my adverts I will be designing my own brand names and adding my own twist.
from my research of local and national they seem to feature a lot of wifi broadband and tv adds such as sky virgin BT talk talk.
I have taken this on board and as I said I will be adding my own twist to recreate this in my newspaper.

Another Story for my inside page is a Bristol rugby player with year 9 boys from Clifton college, I'm going to be using my brother and a few of his friends and the story is going to be based on an upcoming Bristol rugby player that's come in for a few days of intense rugby training.
My photo ideas for this is for the rugby player featured directly in front of the camera and the 4 kids to be spilt in pairs and stand either side. They will be dressed in there Clifton rugby kit on the rugby pitch with the posts in the background. This will be on the left hand side on my inside page.

Im planning to use this logo for my newspaper but photoshop the (1754), This will feature between bristol and gazette for example.
above each of the words on my newspaper heading Im going to add a strip of two advertisement /offers. These features i feel are main conventional parts of a newspaper to really pull it together . Having this above to masthead you cant miss these offers and competitions.
Being a more local newspaper targeting people with families homeowners just like the bristol post. For my front cover im trying to work on it not being text heavy as researching the daily mail and the bristol post have a link they don't have a huge word count on there front cover because your first impression would be its to word heavy.
The daily mail being one of the most read newspapers in Britain is why i have covered some research on my blog, even though im focusing on local newspapers than national . The reason i have taken this into consideration is because the daily mail and the Bristol post have a link and my main focus is Bristol post.
Monday, 9 September 2013
My photo ideas for my front cover of my newspaper are, below my main story headline and picture it will feature a small picture of the restaurant aqua that has just recently opened in the new up coming town of Portishead.
And above this small story headline my main story for my front cover is " Hard work of students pays off again" i shall be selecting a mix of guys and girls in there uniform with there as results. I will have about roughly 8 students to participate in the picture behind the main school building. The reason i have chosen this as a story is because i feel its relevant as we have just had our results and newspapers aim is for local news stories to address there audience with relevant topics.
Above my master head im going to try and fit in a small strip of advertisement on local deals for shops in bristol or restaurants as examples for good short offer advertisement .
My picture idea for my front cover is a medium shot of students from my old school with there results standing behind a school building, with the research of pictures used in newspapers they tend to range from long close up and medium shots on the front cover.

I feel this would would work as a front page for my newspaper due to it being a recent event for students across the country and have quotes of what pupils have said and copy this over to my newspaper to make it simular to the research i have done into other newspapers.
Below this it will feature a new restaurant that has just appeared in Portishead down by the marina 'aqua' , here i will be showing a view from the outside of the restaurant and split this with a meal from that restaurant and a sample of the menu in the text below in my feature.

Story ideas/plan for my newspaper:
This is the structure for the front cover of my newspaper, as you can see im focusing on a big mast head with the newspapers logo above Bristol. My main headline and story is going to feature in the middle left and right section of the paper and there will be another smaller story found underneath the picture about the new restaurant 'Aqua' that come to Portishead marina. Then to the right of this an advert is featured, i have chosen BT as this newspaper is aimed at middle age men and woman with family and the story's and advertisement chosen can hopefully aware this audience.
This is my plan for the layout of my inside cover my main feature of this page is going to be the gromits from bristol that have been in the city for the past month, below the story there will be the 5 day weather forcast and the to the left background infomation about the gromits and the trail familys of bristol are doing, and again to the left there will be a home furniture advert.
Another story for my inside page is going to feature a " bristol rugby player" coming to train the years 8's and 9's in rugby and a picture to feature and quotes from the man himself on kids on how it went

Through doing my research and looking into different newspapers, i have noticed along the way they all seem to follow a simular trend with there layout. Examples of this are they all have one main story headline and then from this a main image featured in the centre of the page.
From researching this, and knowing this way works for its audience and if it were to change i do not feel it would work as the majority of newspaper readers are older generations they dont suit as well to change.
For the content and detail to a newspaper this layout works very well for a clear understanding and for all newspapers to stick to a simular layout for it to work.
Also I found in my research that depending on the content of the newspaper, it has a more appealing factor to middle aged men and above i only found a small percentage of women would read it if it was left by the husband in the house . Than they older audience today due to common affairs intodays news.

This is the questionnaire i have asked some friends the majority is family ranging from 18-50 +, from this i found the majority of newspaper readers where middle aged and upwards ( 36-55) and second to that was the 26-35 bearing this in mind i have chosen to aim my newspaper at an audience of just under middle age to above middle age. By doing this i shall have a range of stories varying from students results to the gromits scattered round bristol and new restaurants and offers in the local area of bristol portishead and nailsea.
Also i found that more males read newspaper to women because of the sports pages which are usually located in newspaper however this tends to be found in the national newspapers than local. From this also there was a higher coverage in national newspapers than local.

Having researched some of the local based newspapers I thought it would be clever to focus on a monthly ' Bristol gazette'. With coverage from Clifton to chew magna stories ranging from, business, food, retail and new and upcoming events.
For my front page I aim to make it a big clear story headline to really capture our audience, also some people tend to take in a bigger focus to regional newspapers rather than national due to the closer focus on there hometown.
I hope for my front page to consist of a large story in the middle with text coming from top left hand side down through to the bottom of the page and I plan to have space on the right hand side where it can be filled with a smaller story headline.
I aim to have a similar looking front cover to this daily express featured below.

Having done some more local research on newspapers such as 'i' 'mercury' Bristol post'
This has helped with what the local audience are after and for my newspaper to work this is a huge factor to bear in mind when publishing.
my front cover head line .....
ive chosen to base my story on something thrilling to really capture this audience and what would entertain and have an interest to our local region

Im aiming my newspaper at b class, reasons being i feel its a good aim to target story lines and advertisement to fit with their lifestyles. Such as new restaurants arriving to the local area and shops and festivals this summer coming to bristol such as bristol harbour fest and ballon fiesta.
Im planning to take the majority of my photos over the summer holidays and plan my story headlines. I have a possible main front page story: my plan is to take pictures at the ballon fiesta and create a story to affect the readers of bristol.
Also going to be looking into more local storys for nailsea and portushead- i plan to mention about the new restaurant coming to portushead (aqua) and how it can potentially effect the other resturants

here are just a few examples of the advertisements you can find in the bristol post, also there where open days for schools in bristol, a new kitchen launch in nailsea with food and drink to accompany the event.
There is a debenhams located in broadmead in bristol to appeal to an audience of shoppers, yet they have the variety for more practical adverts for paul o'brien roofing.
Having advertisements with varied topics gives a broad audience also to help with an every days family needs and wants.
They adverts are chosen carefully in a local paper in what that local area can offer as there wouldn't be much point in advertising something thats not local or the audience of lets say the bristol post.
-they range in size due to the size the company want to spend on advertising there product.
- usually an advert on each page of the newspaper

bristol
My Plan :
For my Newspaper its going to be based on bristol, such as upcoming events for locals, or (previous events )a shock story headline, advertisements for bristol families.
For my main front page headline i wanted to base it around a popular attraction in bristol so the story could effect/attract more viewers. Such as Cabot Circus or bristol habour.
My plan is to take pictures of bristol harbour festival to be able to include this in my front page newspaper.
Advertisement is going to include:
home garden furniture, bt internet, sky tv , bristol hippodrome upcoming performance, new kitchen installed. New restaurant opened on park street with details. ( and ofcourse im not going to be using established brands i will be making up my own

These are the normal conventional parts of the newspaper you'll see on the bristol post such as , photos and headlines and the master head is made very clear . it also both features a strap line which is situated above the headline this gives a bit more information that the headline wouldn't.
From looking at the different examples of national and local papers there comes an order with the layout of the front page it can go from
master head to or master head to picture to headline and competitions can be found on top of the
Head line

Focus on Local papers:
the evening post which is now called the "bristol post" it deals with the news in bristol containing stories from the whole of greater bristol, northern somerset. they also have a home delivery service which can make it easier for the readers. The website of the bristol evening post offers a facility on their website where you can search for local jobs quick and easy.
the Top paper is seen as a more conventional paper where below would be seen as un conventional due to the big statement of the master head.
This is an old version of what the bristol post is today showing it bold almost old fashioned font of a master head. The main image represented near enough in the middle of the newspaper showing the key headline for that dates issue. Also they have now introduced the advertisements on top of the master head for local business's in the area which could be offering one of deals on lunch menus and sport events.
comparing this to the new edition of the bristol post, Where the fonts are modernised the master head is also more specific in its region of information where before the evening post didn't specify. Behind the master head there are women and men which could have a connection to bristol and the newspaper which is helping to connect with its audience.
Theres approxamitly 10 staff writes and it was founded in 1932. It specialises in tabloid journalism this includes emphasised story lines in crime, astrology, gossip accounts also about the personal lives of celebrities and sport stars.

Research for my newspaper:
1.what are the conventional features of a local newspaper front cover ?
title,date,location,advertisement,headings,pictures,eye catching story.
2.who are the different audiences ?
local people from the region of the issued newspaper. Newspapers try and target certain audiences through the linguistics and topic of stories. Factors effecting the different audience type consist of, representation, values, politics, institution, genre and narrative. Also they'll be different target audiences for national and local papers. Such as adults which are news enthusiasts.
3. why do they read local press?
adults are local news enthusiasts, you usually find adults more so read newspaper because of the content which can relate to there interests better than young adults. People will also read local press to stay informed of local news such as a new restaurant coming to the local area. Also advertisement can be useful to the reader for local deals and new business's.
4. which groups are typically portrayed in local papers?
Young people are portrayed badly or proudly you don't see an in-between in the story lines of the younger generation. Theres also sometimes racial profiling and business men and woman. They also show a family with a story line which perhaps can relate to parents which are the readers of that newspaper.
5.what are the differences between local and national newspapers?
National- Has an over view form everywhere where local newspapers usually effect everyone reading and concern the local people where it effects them not reading something national where half the content isn't relevant. National also tends to include and people who are higher up in status . However it can also attract a wider demographic than local due to the limitation in stories which are local.

In my newspaper it'll include the front cover, first inside page and a radio advert for your newspaper.
Digital technology comes into this due to the software we used to create the finish product. The software i used in my AS coursework will be the same in my A2 coursework. They where photo shop,Indesign and Imovie.
Similarities in newspaper front covers include :
-editors
-catchy headlines
-subheadings
-variation of pictures
- Bold Simple fonts
- Title on the top of the cover
-main picture normaly placed on the right
-date of issue
- main heading usually relates to the main picture.
Again the picture is situated in the right hand side, With a main eye catching headline and a story to read underneath. A selection of pictures are used almost to give a debrief on what type of headlines this paper includes as its a national paper it will have story form everywhere. Having 5 columns on the bottom of the paper again sets a structure to sub heading and story that are going to be included through the paper
These newspapers are national which tend to include more celebrity stories, advertisements which are based more nationaly rather than local business's. This differs from a local paper well it will have very near by village stories and stuff that can affect the people of the town/village. Rather than being national half the content couldnt be of interest to the reader. The headline ' blood pressure risk from salt' this can affect everyone not just a specified audience.

the bold title 'big firms let of 25bn in taxes' is very eye catching as soon as you look at it. This will intise your reader to then look at other content on the front cover. the slim picture of kate kept to the right hand side which keeps a clear structure for the front cover which a newspaper needs for all the information it holds. The bold pink heading relating women to make it a feminist title with the page detail below as where you can read on .

This is a national newspaper again having the same layout with there key focus story line someone very well known and a headline to interest. They have layed it on like this for audience recognition and for a key headline to appear like this you expect your audience to have an interest to purchase. Also including real life stories which maybe more realistic to readers rather than celebrity stories but everyone loves some celeb gossip. including the price and the date of issue underneath the name 'the sun'.
